The Strength of Humility

In Orthodox tradition, humility is not weakness but strength. To be humble means to see yourself truthfully: neither higher nor lower than you really are.

A humble person does not need to boast or fight for attention. Instead, he listens, learns, and serves others. In this way, humility opens the heart to God and to people.

The saints often spoke about humility as the foundation of spiritual life. Without it, prayer becomes pride and good works become empty. With humility, even small acts shine with grace.

Humility also brings peace. When we stop comparing ourselves to others, we feel lighter. We no longer need to prove our worth, because we know our value comes from God.

To practice humility is to remember that every gift — our life, our talents, our faith — is given, not earned. Gratitude grows from this memory, and with gratitude comes joy.
